One of my favorite hobbies is collecting rare coins , and I wanted to share a piece of my collection with you today. Pictured on the left of the image above is one of the many rare coins that I have acquired over the years—This is a large cent dating from 1824. This rare coin is now 200 years old. Now on the right is the modern cent from 2024. I find it fascinating to see how much our currency has changed over the years.
The History of the Penny
Large cents, like this one, were among the first coins minted by the U.S. They were produced from 1793 to 1857. They were to be replaced by the flying eagle cent, then the Indian penny, and eventually, the Lincoln cent that we use today. During the time periods they were manufacturing these large cents, over 800 varieties of this coin were created, making them a collector’s dream.
How Much Has Changed—And What Has Remained Constant
Over the last 200 years, the world has certainly changed, just as these two cents have. But something that I find remains constant is the role that business plays in driving the economy forward. Businesses have always been the backbone of our country’s growth. From small shops to major corporations, it’s the buying, selling, and operating of businesses that keep things moving forward.
Connecting My Rare Coin Collection Hobby to My Profession
We all have our different hobbies and passions that bring us joy. For me, collecting rare coins is a way to connect with history and see how things have evolved and changed over the years. However, it also reminds me of the ever-present role of business in shaping our economy.
As both a business advisor and a coin collector, my passions share some similarities. Just as these coins have passed through the hands of many over the centuries, businesses are constantly changing hands, too—bought and sold by people looking to shape their future and transform them into something completely new.
Looking to Buy or Sell?
If you’re thinking about buying or selling a business, let’s have a conversation. As an expert business advisor, I understand this process inside out, and I’d love to help you make cents of everything (dad joke intended). But in all seriousness, whether you’re looking to start a new chapter or pass the torch. Let’s hop on a call and discuss how we can achieve your business goals.
