A Day in the Life of a Business Broker

What does my day typically look like working as an expert business broker? This can be a difficult question to answer as one day never looks quite the same as another. But I’ll try to break it down for you the best I can.

Rise and Shine—Starting Off My Mornings

I tend to be an early riser, and I like to get my writing, thought work and planning done early in the morning. I’m a big believer in planning my day in advance, I use a block planning strategy where I block out time for everything I need to get done throughout the day.

Every day, I make sure to look through all the deals that I have in the market and see what I can do to help move them forward. Even though you’re not always working on a deal every day, if I start the day with the thought, “What can I do to help sell this business?” This makes me more productive throughout the day and helps me develop a rock-solid plan to sell that business effectively.

Getting Into The Afternoon Grind

Then, in the afternoon, my work looks very different. I normally schedule phone calls and meetings for around three hours a day because that’s the reality of my job. If I’m not out there talking to people, stuff simply doesn’t happen. So I have to make sure I schedule lots of time to talk to people, and to do my networking.

My day is intense working as a business broker. I get lots of phone calls, email inquiries, business leads, and just lots of people who want to be on my schedule. So my afternoons are mainly dedicated to this.

Finding Balance in my Day

Balancing all of that can be very difficult sometimes. However, I still prioritize having a healthy work-life balance. So, I make sure I have an opportunity to do some type of physical activity, whether it’s working in the garden, going for a hike, or playing some golf—just something I can do to help me stay physically fit and give my mind a break.

In the evenings, I normally am spending time with my wife Katina, where we catch up on our days and enjoy quality time together. And as the day winds down I always try to do some reading to unwind after a hard days work. Whether it be personal or business, I always enjoy reading a good book and learning something new.

Working as a business broker, my days have always been different. But that’s what I love about what I do: each new day is a different adventure. However, I always structure each day to best prepare myself and my clients for success while still maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
